How local rankings work

Google says local results are mainly based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, which includes reviews and links to your business). It also says plainly that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

You can't change distance without moving premises, so almost everything below works on the other two. Relevance is mostly about giving Google complete, accurate information. Prominence is slower: reviews, mentions and a website that people actually use. If you want the detail on how these three interact, I've written it up in how Google decides who shows up on the map.

The order I work in

Order matters because some fixes take minutes and change what customers see straight away, while others take months to pay back. I start with the profile, because it's what appears in the map, then fix the website, then build reviews and listings over time.

1. Google Business Profile

Most of the profile is filling in fields carefully. The mistakes I see are rarely about missing a secret setting. They're about a name with keywords stuffed into it, a vague category, or hours that haven't been updated since the business opened.

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signage and documents. No added keywords.
  • The most specific primary category that fits, plus relevant secondary categories.
  • Every service listed, with a short description.
  • Opening hours, including special hours for Ramadan and public holidays.
  • Real photos of the premises, team and work, added regularly.
  • Phone number and website that match your site exactly.

There's a step-by-step guide in setting up a Google Business Profile in Dubai, including verification and the rules that get profiles suspended.

2. Your website

Your profile links to your website, and Google reads the site to understand what you do. A single page that says "we offer a wide range of services" gives it very little to work with. One page per service, written for the people who buy it, gives it a lot.

  • One page per service, rather than one generic services page.
  • Your area mentioned naturally where it's true, such as "our clinic in Al Barsha".
  • Name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer, matching your profile.
  • LocalBusiness schema markup. More in a plain-English guide to LocalBusiness schema.
  • Fast on mobile. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are a good benchmark: see Core Web Vitals explained.
  • A clear way to contact you on every page: call, WhatsApp, or a short form.

In Dubai, WhatsApp is often the contact method people prefer, so I put a WhatsApp button next to the phone number rather than hiding it on the contact page.

3. Reviews

Reviews are one of the few ranking signals you can build deliberately, and they also do the selling for you. The rules are strict, though, and some habits that are common in the city break them.

  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, with a direct link to your review form.
  • Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews. Google removes incentivised reviews.
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative, within a few days.

The full routine, including a message template, is in how to get more Google reviews in the UAE.

4. Listings and consistency

Make sure your business details are identical across directories, social profiles and maps apps. Inconsistent phone numbers or addresses confuse customers and search engines, and the old number on a forgotten directory is often where missed calls go. See business listings and NAP consistency.

5. Measurement

Local SEO is easy to do and hard to judge, because rankings move street by street. I judge it on actions, not positions.

  • Check your Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Connect Google Search Console to see which searches show your site.
  • Track calls and WhatsApp clicks from the website as conversions. The setup is in conversion tracking with GA4 and Meta.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the area or service to the business name, which risks suspension.
  • Using a virtual office or co-working desk as the address. Google's guidelines don't allow virtual offices, and co-working offices only qualify with clear signage, staff and customers during business hours.
  • Building dozens of near-identical area pages. See multi-location SEO without doorway pages.
  • Forgetting to update hours for Ramadan and Eid, then collecting reviews from people who arrived to a closed door.

Service-area businesses can have a Business Profile without showing an address, as long as they serve customers at their locations.
There isn't one switch. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile in the right category is the foundation, and reviews and a useful website build on it.
