The three metrics

Each metric describes one thing a visitor feels. Loading: does the main content appear quickly? Responsiveness: when I tap something, does the page react straight away? Stability: does the layout stay still, or does the button jump just as I try to press it?

Google's thresholds

MetricWhat it measuresGoodPoor
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How fast the main content appears2.5 seconds or lessMore than 4 seconds
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How fast the page responds when tapped or clicked200 milliseconds or lessMore than 500 milliseconds
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much things jump around while loading0.1 or lessMore than 0.25

Anything between good and poor is labelled "needs improvement". Google recommends measuring at the 75th percentile of page loads, split by mobile and desktop. In other words, most of your real visitors should get a good experience, not just the ones on fast connections.

If you read older articles, you may see First Input Delay (FID) mentioned. INP replaced FID as the responsiveness metric on 12 March 2024. INP is stricter because it looks at interactions throughout the visit, not just the first one.

How to check your site

  • PageSpeed Insights: enter a URL to see real-user data (if available) and lab tests.
  • Search Console: the Core Web Vitals report groups your pages by status, using real-user data.

Field data versus lab data

PageSpeed Insights shows two kinds of results, and mixing them up causes a lot of worry. Field data comes from real Chrome users visiting your site, gathered in the Chrome UX Report. It is what Google uses for page experience. Lab data comes from a single simulated test on a slow phone and connection. It is useful for diagnosing problems, but the score at the top can swing from one run to the next.

Field data only appears once a page or site has enough eligible visitors to be included in the Chrome UX Report. Many small business sites in Dubai don't, so you will only see lab results. That is fine. Use the lab test to find the biggest problems, fix them, and don't chase a perfect 100.

Common fixes

What usually helps

Slow LCP

Compress and resize the hero image, serve modern formats like WebP, and preload it.

Poor INP

Reduce heavy scripts, especially third-party widgets and chat tools that load on every page.

High CLS

Set width and height on images and embeds, and reserve space for banners and fonts.

What slows down sites in Dubai specifically

The same culprits come up again and again on UAE business sites I review:

  • Autoplaying background videos in the hero section, often several megabytes, on a page most people open on a phone.
  • Several chat and messaging widgets loading at once, plus a WhatsApp button script, on every page.
  • Arabic and English web fonts loaded in many weights, which delays text and causes layout shifts when they swap in.
  • Embedded review carousels, booking widgets and map embeds placed near the top of the page.
  • Page builders that add large amounts of code for simple layouts.

Does it affect rankings?

Page experience is one of many signals Google uses, and great content still matters more. But speed affects people directly: slow pages lose visitors before they ever read anything, especially on mobile.

So I treat Core Web Vitals as a hygiene task. Get the scores out of "poor", ideally into "good", then move on. A page with an excellent score and weak content will not outrank a helpful page that is merely acceptable. Quick win

The hero image is the most common cause of slow LCP on small business sites. Resizing it alone often fixes the score.

Speed is built in from the start on the sites I make for clients; you can see the approach on website design in Dubai.
