First, decide what search should do for you

For most small businesses in Dubai, SEO has one job: bring people who are ready to buy to your phone, WhatsApp or booking page. That usually means local searches ("physiotherapist in JLT") and service searches ("car AC repair Dubai"), not big informational topics.

This matters because it changes where you spend your hours. A salon in Al Barsha does not need a blog post about the history of keratin treatments. It needs to appear when someone nearby searches for a blow-dry this afternoon, and it needs a page that answers price, location and booking in ten seconds. Write down the five searches you would most like to win. Everything below serves those five.

You are competing in two places, not one

Google shows local businesses in two different ways. The map results (the box with pins) come mostly from your Google Business Profile. The regular blue links below come from your website. Small businesses often pour effort into one and ignore the other.

Side by side

Where each result comes from

Map results

  • Driven by your Google Business Profile
  • Category, reviews and distance matter a lot
  • Customers call or get directions straight from it
  • Covered in my local SEO checklist

Website results

  • Driven by your pages and their content
  • Titles, page quality and links matter
  • Customers read before they contact you
  • Reach people outside your immediate area

If you serve customers at a physical location or in a defined area, start with the map. If you sell online or across the UAE, the website carries more weight. Most businesses need both, just not on the same day.

The starting order

Where to put your first hours

Google Business Profile

Complete every field: primary category, services, hours, photos, area. For local businesses this often matters more than the website. My Business Profile guide walks through it.

Technical basics

Search Console connected, sitemap submitted, site fast and mobile-friendly, nothing accidentally blocked from Google.

Service pages

One clear page per service, written around what customers search and the questions they ask before booking.

Reviews

A simple system to ask every customer, within Google's rules. Google does not allow offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews.

Helpful content

Answer the questions customers ask before they buy, one question per page, once the service pages exist.

The order is deliberate. A blog post cannot help you if Google cannot index the site, and a beautiful service page loses to a competitor with a complete profile and fifty reviews in the map results. Fix the foundations, then write.

Writing pages that rank

Most small business websites in Dubai have one "Services" page listing everything in a paragraph each. Google struggles to rank a page like that for any single service, and customers struggle to find what they need. Splitting services into their own pages is usually the single biggest content improvement you can make.

  • Use the words your customers use. Check Google's autocomplete and "People also ask" for your service. My keyword research guide has the full process.
  • Put the main topic in the page title and main heading, plainly. "Deep cleaning in Dubai" beats "Excellence in every corner".
  • Answer the obvious questions on the page: what it costs, how long it takes, where you are, how to book.
  • Add real photos of your work and your team. Stock photos don't build trust.
  • Link between related pages so visitors and search engines can find them.

What to ignore for now

Plenty of SEO activity looks productive and does very little for a small site. Some of it carries real risk.

  • Buying links. It breaks Google's spam policies and the risk isn't worth it.
  • Publishing dozens of thin articles. A few genuinely useful pages beat many weak ones, and Google treats mass-produced low-value pages as spam. More in what Google says about AI content.
  • Obsessing over keyword density. Write clearly for people.
  • Anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee that.

How to measure

Use Google Search Console to see which searches show your pages and how often people click. Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions as conversions. Rankings matter less than enquiries. If you rank third for a search nobody uses, nothing changes for the business.

I keep a simple monthly view for small clients: impressions and clicks from Search Console, profile calls and direction requests from the Business Profile, and enquiries tagged by source. Three numbers that move in the right direction tell you more than any ranking report.

Realistic timing

Expect early movement within a couple of months and meaningful results over several months, depending on competition. More detail in how long SEO takes in the UAE.

A weekly routine an owner can keep

SEO for a small business works best as a small habit rather than a big project. This is roughly what I suggest to owners who want to handle it themselves:

  1. Ask every finished job or visit for a Google review, the same day.
  2. Add two or three new real photos to your Business Profile.
  3. Reply to any new reviews, good or bad, briefly and politely.
  4. Once a month, check Search Console for errors and look at which searches brought clicks.
  5. Once a month, improve one page: add a missing answer, a better photo or clearer pricing.

If you'd rather hand the setup and pages to someone, that's the kind of work I do on local SEO in Dubai, at freelancer rates with a fixed quote.

Questions people ask

Yes, the basics. Completing your Business Profile, writing clear service pages and asking for reviews don't need an expert. Technical issues and competitive niches benefit from help.
For businesses customers search for, yes. It builds a source of enquiries you don't pay for per click.
Local SEO focuses on map results and searches tied to a location. General SEO covers all organic search results.
Start with the language most of your customers use when they contact you. If a meaningful share use Arabic, add a properly written Arabic version rather than a machine translation.
Enough to give each main service its own page, plus a homepage, about page and contact page. Quality and clarity matter more than page count.
