How Google reads "near me"
When someone types "near me", Google uses their location to look for relevant businesses close by. Its help page says that if a customer doesn't share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location. That's why distance matters so much for these searches, and why your Google Business Profile does most of the work, not your website copy.
The phrase itself is just a signal of intent. "Dentist near me" and "dentist" typed on a phone in Jumeirah often return a very similar map. What changes the result is how complete your profile is, how close you are, and how well known you are.
What a near-me searcher needs
Think about the person, not the keyword. They're on a phone, often in a car or walking, and they want to know three things fast: can you do what I need, are you open, and how do I get there. Every step below answers one of those.

Near-me intent and what answers it
| They want to know | Where it is answered | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Can you do this | Category, services, reviews | Primary category and full services list |
| Are you open now | Hours and special hours | Ramadan, Eid and public holiday hours set |
| How do I get there | Pin, directions, photos | Pin on the right building, entrance photo |
| How do I contact you | Call and website buttons | A number that is answered, WhatsApp on the site |
What actually helps
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with the right category and services. The setup is in optimising a Google Business Profile in Dubai.
- Correct opening hours. People searching "near me" often filter by "open now".
- A website that loads fast on mobile and has a tap-to-call or WhatsApp button.
- Area names used naturally on your site: "We're in Al Quoz, near the Al Khail Road exit".
- Reviews that mention what you do, written by real customers in their own words.
Hours deserve extra attention in the UAE. Many businesses change hours during Ramadan, and the dates move each year. Set special hours in your profile ahead of time, otherwise you'll appear as open when you're not, or disappear from "open now" filters when you are.
What doesn't help
- Writing "near me" all over your pages. It reads badly and doesn't make you closer to anyone.
- Creating pages for every neighbourhood with the same text and only the area name changed. That's the pattern Google's spam policies describe as doorway and scaled content abuse.
- Listing a fake address in a better area. It breaks Google's guidelines and sends customers to the wrong place.
Directions matter
Write clear directions on your website and in photos: building name, entrance, parking. In Dubai, "we're hard to find" is a real reason people leave a bad review.
Getting found inside big buildings and malls
A lot of Dubai businesses sit inside towers, malls or business parks. The searcher can be fifty metres away and still not find you. A few things help: make sure the map pin sits on the correct building, name the tower and floor in your address, upload a photo of the entrance or nearest landmark, and mention the nearest metro station or car park on your contact page. These details turn a found listing into a visit.
For service-area businesses
If you go to customers, such as home services, set your service areas in your profile and build genuinely useful service pages. Google lets you list areas by city or district rather than a radius. Here's how to do that for several emirates without crossing into spam: SEO for businesses serving Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
How to tell if it is working
Search Console won't show you most map activity, so look at your Business Profile performance instead: calls, direction requests and website clicks. If direction requests rise but visits don't, the problem is usually the pin or the entrance. If calls go unanswered, that's a staffing issue, not an SEO one. I check these monthly alongside the rest of the local SEO checklist.
