Own store, marketplaces or both
The first decision shapes everything else: where the sale happens. Marketplaces bring customers who are already shopping. Your own store gives you the customer relationship and the margin, but you have to bring every visitor yourself.
Side by side
Where to sell
Marketplaces (Amazon.ae, Noon)
- Built-in traffic and trust
- Fees and commission on sales
- Less control over brand and customer data
- Price competition
Your own store
- Full brand control
- You own customer relationships
- You must bring the traffic
- Better margins once established
Many UAE brands use marketplaces for reach and their own store for repeat customers and higher margins. If you go this route, keep pricing consistent enough that marketplace shoppers don't feel cheated when they find your site, and give your own store a reason to exist: bundles, loyalty, faster support or exclusive products.
Payments and delivery
Checkout is where UAE stores lose sales they've already paid to attract. Customers expect familiar payment options and no surprises on delivery cost or timing.
- Offer the payment methods customers expect, which in the UAE often includes cash on delivery and buy-now-pay-later services like Tabby and Tamara, alongside cards and wallets.
- Be clear on delivery times and costs before checkout.
- Make returns straightforward and explain them clearly.
There's also a legal reason for clarity. The UAE's e-commerce law, Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2023, took effect in September 2023. Gulf News reported that it prohibits extra delivery or logistics charges beyond those agreed and gives consumers return or replacement rights in a number of cases. Check the details with a lawyer, but the marketing lesson is simple: show the full cost before the customer commits.
Marketing that drives sales
Most small stores I look at spread a modest budget across too many channels. I'd rather do two well, then add a third once tracking shows what's paying back.

Channels for UAE online stores
| Channel | Best for | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Meta and TikTok ads | Finding new customers with product video | Short videos and UGC. See UGC for UAE brands |
| Google Shopping and search | People already looking for your product | A clean product feed and accurate prices |
| Retargeting | Visitors who viewed or added to cart | Pixel and catalogue set up. See retargeting in the UAE |
| Email and WhatsApp | Repeat customers | Consent-based lists. See PDPL basics |
| Seasonal campaigns | Peaks in demand | Stock, offers and creative planned weeks ahead |
On WhatsApp: its Business Messaging Policy only allows messages to people who gave you their number and opted in, and every opt-out must be respected. Collect that opt-in at checkout with a clear, unticked box.
Seasonal peaks
White Friday in November, Ramadan and Eid, and Dubai Shopping Festival are the periods most UAE stores plan around. The mistake I see is starting ads the week the sale begins, when costs are at their highest and audiences haven't seen the brand. Build audiences with content and retargeting in the weeks before, then convert during the sale. Dates and planning notes are in the UAE marketing calendar.
Trust signals
A new store has to prove it's real before anyone hands over card details.
- Genuine product reviews and photos from customers.
- Clear company details and contact information.
- Recognised payment and delivery partners shown at checkout.
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages.
- A visible returns policy and a WhatsApp number that someone actually answers.
Measure the right numbers
Return on ad spend matters, but on its own it misleads. I also watch contribution margin after ad spend, delivery and returns, the repeat purchase rate, and how many orders come from returning customers. A store that breaks even on the first order and makes its profit on the second needs a very different plan from one that has to profit on every sale. Make sure purchases are tracked correctly first: see conversion tracking with GA4 and Meta.
