WhatsApp is how a lot of business gets done here. Customers message a florist, a clinic, a car rental desk or a property agent the same way they message friends. Click-to-WhatsApp ads remove the step between seeing an ad and starting that conversation. The catch is that the ad only starts the sale. The reply finishes it.

WhatsApp tools for business
| Tool | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Business app | Free app for small businesses | A few people replying from phones |
| WhatsApp Business Platform (API) | Accessed through a provider, with automation | Teams, CRM integration, higher volume |
| Click-to-WhatsApp ads | Meta ads that open a chat | Turning ads into conversations |
Most small businesses should start with the free Business app and move to the Platform when one phone can't cope: several people answering, chats getting lost, or a need to connect conversations to a CRM.
Setting up the ad
- Connect your WhatsApp Business account to your Facebook Page in Meta Business settings.
- Create a campaign with an engagement or sales objective and WhatsApp as the destination.
- Write a pre-filled greeting so the customer can send the first message in one tap.
- Set up quick replies for the most common questions.
Prepare your profile before the ads go live
People will check your WhatsApp business profile before they reply. Fill in the description, address, hours and website, and use a clear logo. Set a greeting message for first contact and an away message for out-of-hours chats that says when you'll reply. A catalogue helps if you sell products, because people can browse without asking for prices one by one.
What makes it work
- Response time. Reply within minutes during business hours. Slow replies waste the click.
- A clear offer in the ad, so the conversation starts with intent.
- Qualifying questions early: area, budget, timing.
- Tracking the outcome. Label chats by source and record which ones became customers.

The first five minutes of a WhatsApp lead
Greet and confirm
Thank them, use their name, and confirm what they asked about in the ad.
Qualify
Ask the one or two questions that decide fit: area, date, budget or quantity.
Give something useful
A price range, availability, a photo or a short voice note. Show you are real.
Propose the next step
A call, a booking link, a visit or an order. Make it specific.
Label the chat
Tag it by source and stage so you can count results later.
Measuring results
Meta reports conversations started, which is a useful early signal, but it isn't revenue. Chats that start and go nowhere look the same in Ads Manager as chats that turn into big orders. Keep a simple log of which ad conversations became customers, using labels in the Business app or your CRM if you're on the Platform. Compare cost per customer against your other channels. My conversion tracking guide covers how WhatsApp fits with the rest of your tracking.
What it costs to reply
Ad spend is charged like any other Meta ad. Messaging on the WhatsApp Business Platform has its own pricing. According to Meta's developer documentation, when a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens in which non-template replies are free. When the customer arrives through a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window of 72 hours also opens. Pricing rules change, so check the current page before you budget. The free Business app doesn't charge per message.
Respect the rules
Only message people who have contacted you or agreed to hear from you. Follow WhatsApp's business messaging policies and the UAE's data protection rules when storing customer details. See PDPL basics.
Who it suits best
It works well for businesses where buyers want to ask a question before committing: clinics, salons, car rental, tutoring, home services, restaurants taking group bookings, and real estate. It's weaker for simple products people are happy to buy straight from a website, where a sales campaign to a checkout is usually more efficient.
Weekend coverage
If ads run on weekends, someone needs to reply on weekends. Otherwise, schedule ads for the hours you can answer.
