Why a system beats inspiration

Most small businesses start video with energy, post five times in a week, and then stop. The problem is rarely ideas or skill. It's that video is treated as something you do when you have time, and in a small business you never have time. A fixed weekly slot, a running list of ideas and a simple edit style remove most of the decisions, which is what keeps it going.

The weekly system

Social and content · Dubai

One afternoon a week

Plan (30 min)

Pick 4 to 6 ideas from a running list of customer questions and recent work.

Film (90 min)

Shoot everything in one session on a phone: vertical, good light, clear audio.

Edit (2 hours)

Cut tight, add captions, a hook on screen and a clear ending.

Schedule (20 min)

Queue across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

Four hours a week sounds like a lot until you compare it with the time spent trying to make one perfect video. Once the routine settles, many teams get faster, and the edit time shrinks first.

Filming in Dubai

A few local realities shape a good shoot here. Midday sun outdoors is harsh for most of the year and makes faces squint and shadows hard, so film outside early in the morning or late in the afternoon, or move indoors. Air conditioning hum gets picked up by microphones, so switch it off for a few minutes while you record speech if you can. And be careful with other people in shot: UAE law treats capturing or publishing someone's image without consent as an offence, so keep bystanders out of frame and get consent from customers.

Hooks: the first two seconds

Spend more time on the opening than on anything else. If people scroll past, nothing after it matters. These patterns work across most industries:

  • State the mistake: "Stop doing this before your AC service."
  • Make a specific promise: "Three things to check before signing a Dubai lease."
  • Start mid-action, with the most visual moment first.
  • Answer a real question in the first line, then explain.

A sample shoot list

Walking into a filming session with a written list is the difference between six usable videos and two. A typical list for a service business might look like this: two customer questions answered to camera, one process clip of a real job, one quick tip, one behind-the-scenes moment and one offer or announcement. Film each in two or three takes, plus a few seconds of extra footage you can cut over the top later.

Ideas that never run out

  • Every question a customer asked this week is a video.
  • Every finished job is a before-and-after or process video, where your industry rules allow.
  • Every mistake customers make is a "don't do this" video.
  • Every podcast or long video becomes several clips. See my podcast production in Dubai page.

An editing checklist

  1. Cut every pause and every "so, um" at the start.
  2. Put a short text hook on screen in the first frame.
  3. Add captions and check them.
  4. Keep text away from the edges, where platform buttons sit.
  5. End with one clear next step: follow, book, message.

Repurpose everything

One good video can run on Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn with small edits. Export a clean version without any app's watermark before reposting, adjust the caption to each platform, and check each platform's current length and format guidance, since these change. For platform-specific advice, see Instagram marketing in Dubai and organic TikTok for UAE brands.

Judging what works

After four weeks, sort your videos by average watch time and by enquiries or profile visits. Make more of the top three and drop the bottom three. Your strongest videos are also your best ad candidates, and if you want to add creator content alongside your own, see UGC for UAE brands.

The hook

If you only improve one thing this month, make it the first two seconds of every video.

Questions people ask

Not for regular short-form content. A phone, good audio and a system are enough. Use professionals for brand films and key ads.
As short as the idea allows. Many effective videos are under 30 seconds.
Yes, with small edits and without other platforms' watermarks.
A clip-on microphone. People forgive average video, but they scroll away from bad audio.
Four to six from one weekly session is a sustainable target for most small teams.
