What a digital marketing freelancer actually does
"Digital marketing" covers a lot of separate skills: websites, SEO, paid ads, social media, email, content and tracking. Very few people are excellent at all of them. Most freelancers in Dubai have one or two strong specialities and a working knowledge of the rest.
That's fine, as long as you know which is which. Before you hire, decide what problem you're actually solving. "We need more enquiries" might be a website problem, an ads problem or a reviews problem, and each needs a different person.

Match the problem to the skill
Nobody finds you
You need SEO and a properly set up Google Business Profile. See local SEO in Dubai.
People visit but don't enquire
You need a better website or landing page, and conversion work.
You need results this month
You need paid ads, with tracking set up first.
Your brand is invisible
You need a content and social media plan you can sustain.
If two or three of those apply, start with the one closest to the money. A business with a slow website and no tracking will waste whatever it spends on ads, so the website and tracking come first even though ads feel more exciting.
Where to find freelancers in Dubai
- Referrals from other business owners. Still the most reliable source, because you get an honest account of how they work.
- LinkedIn, searching for the skill plus "Dubai". Look at what they post and who engages with it, not just their headline.
- Portfolio sites like Behance for design-heavy work, where you can see actual campaigns rather than descriptions of them.
- Google, which tells you something useful: a marketer who ranks for their own service probably knows SEO.
How to vet them properly
Portfolios are curated. What you want to understand is how they think. Ask them to walk you through one project: what the goal was, what they tried, what didn't work and what they changed. People who did the work can answer that in detail. People who are reselling someone else's work tend to stay vague.
- Ask to see a real report they've sent a client, with the client's name removed.
- Ask who will actually do the work. Some "freelancers" outsource everything.
- Ask what they'd need from you in the first two weeks. Good freelancers have a clear answer.
- Ask what they would not do for your business. Someone who recommends every channel hasn't thought about yours.
- Check that they hold a valid freelance permit or trade licence and can issue proper invoices. See freelance permits and VAT in the UAE.
Google's own advice on hiring an SEO applies to marketers generally: interview them, check references, and remember that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Treat any guarantee of rankings, followers or leads as a reason to keep looking. I keep a longer list of questions to ask before hiring a marketer in Dubai.
What a good freelancer should know about Dubai
General marketing skill transfers anywhere, but a few things are specific to selling in the UAE, and a freelancer who has worked here will raise them without being asked.
- WhatsApp is where many enquiries end up. Ads, websites and Google profiles should make it easy to message you, and tracking should count those messages.
- The calendar matters. Ramadan, Eid, the summer slowdown and events like Dubai Shopping Festival change both demand and ad costs. See the UAE marketing calendar.
- Audiences are mixed. Some businesses need Arabic as well as English, and the right answer depends on who buys from you, not on a rule.
- Some sectors are regulated. Healthcare, real estate and finance have advertising rules, so your freelancer should ask about approvals before writing a single ad.
How pricing usually works
Freelancers in the UAE generally price in one of three ways: a fixed fee per project, a monthly retainer for ongoing work, or occasionally an hourly rate. Fixed project fees are the easiest to budget for. Retainers make sense for work that never really finishes, like social media or ongoing ads management. I've written more about choosing between a retainer and a project fee and about what drives the cost of digital marketing in Dubai.
A rule worth keeping
Ad spend and your freelancer's fee are separate. Make sure the ad budget is paid from your own ad account, with you as the owner, so you keep the account and its history if you ever part ways.
Setting the relationship up to work
- Write a one-page brief: the goal, the audience, the budget and what success looks like. Here's how to write one.
- Agree on one number that matters most, such as enquiries, bookings or sales, rather than likes or impressions.
- Give access to your accounts as a user, not by sharing passwords. Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile and Meta's business tools all let you add people with set permission levels while you stay the owner.
- Book a short monthly review. Fifteen minutes on what worked and what changes next month is enough.

Mistakes I see when businesses hire
The most common one is hiring on price or portfolio alone, without checking how the person reports and communicates. The second is changing direction every two weeks. The third is handing over ownership: letting a freelancer set up the ad account, domain or analytics in their own name. Each of these is easy to avoid if you know to look for it. More in red flags when hiring a marketer.
When a freelancer is the wrong choice
If you need ten people's worth of output every week, a TV-level production or round-the-clock community management, an agency or an in-house team will serve you better. Freelancers are strongest when the scope is clear and you want direct contact with the person doing the work. I compare the options in freelancer or agency in Dubai, and you can see how I work on my Dubai services page.
